Autocrossing

Beginning in 2003 we have a NEW class structure for BMWs.  This includes 2 new street-tire classes for A and B cars (AST and BST).  Other classes will remain the same (AA, A, B and C).  There will no longer be a modification points assignment for cars with type-R rubber (Hoosiers, Kuhmo Victoracers or any tires with a wear rating of 140 or less).  Every participant needs to reclassify their car before the first event January 12th!!  Also note that there are new points assignments for models and certain modifications.  Please go to the classification page and note each and every modification you have performed.  We rely upon your honesty so for the sake of all competitors, please be accurate.  Don't forget that if you are running tires and wheels larger than OEM you must indicate it.  Also note, we are requiring that all BMW competitors for the 2003 season be members in good standing of the BMWCCA in order to be awarded points for each event.  If you are not already a member, please visit the national BMWCCA online signup page for membership.

Autocrosses are low-speed timed driving skill events. They reward car control and skill yet, most importantly, are fun! You don't need to be Mario Andretti and have an M3 Lightweight to do well. They consist of timed solo (i.e., you are alone on the track) laps of a twisty course laid out using traffic cones. The objective is to drive around the course without hitting any cones or missing gates. The main attraction of autocrossing is that it allows drivers to compete in a safe environment. Not only are the speeds low (under 60 miles per hour at the fastest point in a lap) but also the course is laid out such that the only obstacles are soft traffic cones.

Our events are scheduled at the Houston Police Academy.  Events start at 8:30 am (do not enter the gates before this time) and usually conclude by 3:30 pm.  Dress according to weather forecast, wear comfortable shoes (sandals can not be worn while driving), bring a helmet if you have one (SNELL 90 or higher), non-alcoholic drinks and lunch.  We divide the group in three; one group runs while the other works the corners, and then we switch.  The switch is done as quickly as possible to maximize participants track time and enjoyment.

See our calendar of driving events for a list of the upcoming autocrosses by the BMW CCA and other local clubs.

Car Control School

The Houston Chapter BMW CCA (with some help from our Porsche and SCCA  friends), will conduct a car control school on March 14, 15, & 16 of 2003.  The Houston Chapter BMW CCA car control school is very popular and the slots are limited, giving first priority to club members.

The cost is $50.00 per driver and includes the following:

  • A classroom session from 7 - 9 PM Friday.  The Friday session is open, free of charge, to anyone that would like to attend but it will be mandatory for everyone driving on Saturday.
  • Driving practice at Houston Police Academy (HPA) begins at 8:30 am Saturday and will run until approximately 3:30 pm.  This will include braking, slalom, emergency lane change, skid pad and other small group exercises.  Lunch will be provided.
  • Your $50.00 fee also includes entry into the regularly scheduled BMW autocross event Sunday at HPA beginning at 8:30 am, finishing around 3:30 pm.  This will give the perfect opportunity to practice those new found skills.

This event will be held rain or shine so come prepared.  We will limit the event to the first 40 participants who register.

High-Speed Driver's Education

The Houston Chapter is holding a High Speed Driver's Education event at Texas World Speedway on November 9-10, 2002.  For more information click here, or download the application (in PDF) here If you have registerred already, you will need to download, complete and bring with you the Medical Information Form to the track. You will need to turn in the completed Medical Information Form at the registration table. Click here to download the Medical Information Form.

The Porsche Club of America Lone Star Region offers high-speed driving education sessions at the Texas World Speedway (just south of College Station). These are held on average every two months and are open to non-Porsche drivers. However, they are extremely popular and often are fully-booked. Another organization that puts on high-speed driver's schools at TWS is the Texas World Speedway Motorsports Club. Their schedule of events is somewhat more frequent (about once a month), the run groups longer and less populated, but they are somewhat more expensive on a per-event basis than the LSR-PCA.

See our Texas World Speedway information page for more information about the TWS track.

Club Racing

We are currently trying to build up a viable BMW club racing program within the Houston region and its geographic vicinity. Our first BMW CCA Club Race in March 1999 was a success by virtue of bootstrapping a twelve car race where there used to be no BMW club racing. Our biggest challenge now is to continue building it up. At this time, we are working to attract more out-of-state established racers to come to our event and build up a more sizeable field for upcoming races.  Our next event is scheduled for March 21, 22, 23, 2003 at Texas World Speedway.

March 21, 22, 23, 2003
@ Texas World Speedway

This will be the 5th annual March race with the Porsche Club.  There are
expected to be 2 Porsche race groups and 1 BMW race group.  There will be
both sprint and enduro races.  Spectators are welcome as are about 10 volunteers!  This is always a fun event with a lot of cool race cars on hand.
