When:
Saturday, May 3rd
We
meet at the Shell & Sonic at the junction of Hwy 99 and
Colonial Pkwy (2nd stop light North of I-10 on Hwy 99) at
9 AM to get the required documents completed, determine a
car count and get organized into groups. Then leave out at
10 AM sharp. Please try and be punctual as we have reservations
for lunch in Round Top and are on somewhat of a time schedule.
About
80 miles up the road through some sweeping country back roads
and then some exciting twists & turns we pull into Fayetteville
for a rest/nature break. When I was mapping out the course
I had a grin on my face for 2 days after making this part
of the drive. Not only are these small winding country roads
a lot of fun, but we also go through some nice countryside
on the wide open roads (bring your radar detectors & radios).
For those
of you that may not be familiar with the Antique Weekend that
is held the first weekend in April and October of each year
in this part of Texas, this will introduce you to the area.

After
a good stretch in Fayetteville it’s off to Round Top
which is only another 14 miles away. We then chill out and
enjoy lunch at Klump’s Café. Like most businesses
and homes in Round Top, Klump’s is located in a historic
building, a 1800s tinsmith shop that was later converted to
a country store. Today it's a country cafe owned and operated
by the Klump family. Ma and Pa Klump do the cooking, their
daughter waits tables, their son helps with the barbecue,
and "Granny" Klump runs the cash register.
The Klumps
have been smokin' in Round Top for two decades, first selling
barbecue to oil field workers from a downtown grocery store.
Then in 1991 they moved their pit to this building. Today
the family fires up the pits and produces brisket, pork, chicken,
pork spare ribs, and sausage with sides of potato salad, coleslaw,
and pinto beans. Everything on the menu is homemade. You'll
also find a good burger and steak here plus fried chicken,
and fish. Check out their website:

After
lunch we group back together for the return trip through more
back country roads for another 98 miles. We end the drive
at Starbucks at LaCenterra off Hwy 99 in Katy.
