Our loop through the Texas Hill Country

From Fredericksburg: US87 to FM2323. (Note: at this intersection you will be about 2 miles south of the Hill Top Cafe.

Right on 2323. 2323 is a nice two lane road with very little traffic. You can still maintain a good speed but watch out for the dips. If there is heavy rain, you may want to avoid 2323 due to flooding (remember I just warned you about those dips. FM2323 to will take you to State Highway 16, just south of Llano. (16 will get you from Fredericksburg to Llano but 2323 is a nice drive.)

16 through Llano to 29.

29 east to Burnet and 281.

281 south past Marble Falls to 71.

71 east to 3238.

3238 to FM12.

12 south through Dripping Springs and to FM150.

About 5.5 miles after turning onto 150, left onto FM1826. Once on 1826, watch for the Salt Lick on your left (I would recommend stopping in for some great bbq.)

1826 is also another fun ride - enjoy it back to 290.

Left on 290. 290 will take you through Dripping Springs, Johnson City and Stonewall. If you love flowers, stop at the Wildseed Farms (www.wildseedfarms.com) about 6 miles east of Fredericksburg. Just past the Wildseed Farms and to the left (west bound) is 1376.

Left on 1376 and about 5 miles to Luckenbach (pay attention or you will miss it). Relax and enjoy the party.

From Luckenbach you can either take 1376 north to 290 and then 290 west to Fredericksburg or continue south on 1376 to Boerne where you will be able to find your way to I-10. 1376 is another road I would strongly recommend you drive.

Best roads of the drive: US87, FM2323, FM12, FM150, FM1826 and FM1376. Yes, the other roads may be designated as "Texas Hill Country Trails" but the Farm to Market Roads are more fun to drive.

If this drive sounds like something you may want to do, stay tuned. We are working with the Tejas Chapter on doing a drive through the Hill Country in the fall.

Incidently, on our way home we returned, hoping to get some pictures without any people. Well, even early on Sunday morning Luckenbach is popular with strange people on bikes wearing funny helmets and clothing. Except these riders were pedaling their ride and drinking power drinks instead of beer (I know, some of you consider beer a "power drink" but that is not what I meant).

To get to Luckenbach from Fredericksburg take 290 east about 6 miles to FM1376. Then go south for about 6 or 7 miles to Luckenbach. Pay attention or you will pass it up (it will be on your right as you head south). And don't be fooled by "Uptown Luckenbach" - that only means you are close.
